Walter Scott, Jr. Energy Center Unit 3 - Council Bluffs, Iowa
The Walter Scott, Jr. Energy Center Unit 3 is the first of four coal-fired plants at the complex to be retrofit with a scrubber and baghouse addition. The spray dryer absorbers are among the largest scrubbers in North America. This project is a fast-tracked, highly coordinated effort, requiring teamwork, persistence and cooperation to promote a high-level of environmental stewardship and value.
A Kiewit-led joint venture was awarded the contract for the detailed design, procurement, construction, start-up and testing of the dry lime flue gas desulfurization system and baghouse addition to an existing 690-megawatt coal-fired power plant. The project includes two pulse jet fabric filters, two spray dryer absorbers, three ID fans, an ash handling system and the associated equipment required for the air quality control systems retrofit. Current and future emissions targets for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, mercury and particulate matter are increasingly more stringent.
This retrofit is projected to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 67 percent and improve the plant’s efficiency by 2.75 percent. These upgrades will conclude in late 2009, resulting in an annual reduction of nearly six trains of coal needed to generate power.
